Cultural practices of music and dance are circulating at unprecedented speed through clubs, festivals and digital platforms. While this creates new approaches and connections, the histories, communities and contexts behind the sounds often lose visibility along the way.

This also raises questions of recognition and attribution: how are cultural origins acknowledged when music travels, and what forms of credit, visibility and responsibility matter today, beyond legal frameworks such as copyright?

This conversation asks how DJs, dancers, artists and organisers can contextualise music and movement in meaningful ways. Bringing together perspectives from club culture, dance, and research, the panel explores how context can deepen our understanding and experience, while engaging with them in ways that acknowledge and honour their histories.

Moderation:
Nadine Abena Cobbina – GAZE
Nadine is a selfemployed curator and artist working on or behind stage. Her practice centres on communication through text, voice, body, and music, engaging with socio-political, anti-racist, feminist, and cultural themes. Moving between music, performance, and stage design, she creates immersive atmospheres and worlds. She is the founder of the Vienna-based series GAZE and has collaborated with FM4, derStandard, burgtheater and divercitylab.

Speakers:
Pia Raddatz – mdw
Pia is a PhD researcher at the Dept. of Music Sociology, University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna. Her work explores the history of popular music and club culture from a feminist, queer-trans perspective. In her PhD, she examines the consecration of individuals of cultural interest and how club culture is constructed as cultural heritage through the lenses of class, gender, and race. Formerly a DJ and cultural producer, she now works as a speaker and moderator.

Stéphane Peeps – Groove Service
Stéphane Peeps is a Berlin-based choreographer, teacher, DJ, and creative director from Paris. Rooted in African dances and hip-hop, his movement practice has expanded through jazz, modern dance, and tap. As a choreographer and dance educator, he explores movement, rhythm, and body awareness, while connecting dance with club culture through projects such as his Berlin-based house music party series Groove Service.

Thao Nguyen – Algoriddim Girls
THAO is a Vienna-based DJ whose sound ranges from bass-heavy to percussive club music, rooted in the Hardcore Continuum. She focuses on artists from South-East and East Asia and their diasporas, highlighting those who weave traditional sounds and cultural references into contemporary electronic music. Her sets create spaces for visibility, remembrance, and resistance while exploring the diverse cultural origins of club music.
